Benefits of web based software

When the personal computer first became widely used in the 1980s all software programs had to be installed on their personal computer. The growth of the Internet has fueled a new model, web or Internet based software. In this model, the software runs on the vendors web servers and the consumer visits the vendor's website. No software is installed on the consumer's PC. This model has fueled a rapid pace of software development. Frequency of software updates - The consumer does not have to handle all the updates to keep their software current. If the vendor releases new software, the next time the consumer logs in they get to use it. Instead of a software release a year, consumers get new features at an almost constant pace. Cost of software updates - No disks or CDs to mail. No software to be downloaded to each consumer. This means lower costs for the vendor and this translates into lower prices for the consumer. Bug Fixes - Because the vendor only has to make updates to their site and not distribute the software to hundreds, thousands or millions of customers they can fix bugs in a more responsive manner. This model is also widely used to deliver software to businesses. Here the software is widely known as Software-as-a-service (Saas) and just as in the consumer world, the business adoption of this software is growing rapidly in the 21st century. |
